Resources

  1. The LRC received several 12 New iPads this past August which have been in constant use for audio video work during carrousels, digital storytelling and research work. They will become one of the main tools for the upcoming 6th grade during sy13-14 and are written into the schemes as work as such.
  2. The LRC receieved new tripods, iPad tripod fittings, lighting kits, headsets and other AV equipment this year. Some of these items were replacements while others were purchased to complete sets or adapt to the changing needs of digital work in the LRC.
  3. New imacs were not purchased this school year and are needed for sy2012/13 in order to effectively implement the planned ICT teaching room whilst providing the best service to teachers and students booking in to the LRC for class work. All original iMacs have received updated RAM memory and are functioning well even though they are 5 years old. They cannot be updated to the newest operating systems and this is and will continue to be cause for concern as they will not run some of the new programs or newer versions.
  4. Noise is a continuous problem in the LRC. Classes cannot be run back to back in seminar rooms for this reason, while staff and students find it difficult to study and read in the facility.
  5. The "Studio" area at the back of the LRC is now the accepted place for students to work on digital video.Video work is seriously affected by the noise levels, as a result the majority of the several hundreds of videos produced here each SY are of poor sound quality. We are looking into the use of dividers and banners in the central area to help reduce noise issues and there are plans in place to revamp Large A and B into an ICT teaching room and to enclose the front of the Studio area with a glass wall.
  6. Teaching spaces are often taken up by one or two auditors or by administrative teams in meetings or performing administrative duties. This results in teachers and students being turned away from an area that was developed with for educational uses. This is not acceptable practise and alternative arrangements should be made for administrative tasks in future.

Curriculum changes

  1. Poraora virutal world ran for the second year in 6th grade for work with internet safety and working in virtual worlds.
  2. The creative carrousel continued to run this year, with a change for 8th grade in the second half. Recommended students or those interested in ICT were enrolled in the Scratch Programming and Lego Robotics Classes which ran until the end of the school year and received and academic grade.
  3. Minecraft was introduced to 7th grade during SY12-13 as part of ICT lessons. Students designed and created fortresses and castles in teams and then put them to the task. This activity was based on the work they had done in 6th Humanities on this topic.
  4. Digital Portfolio work has become more prominent and is now supported by other departments. The upcoming 6th grade will use their blogs instead of wikis to house their portfolios.
  5. Reaction Grid has been replaced by Jokaydia Grid and used briefly(for lack of time) by 7th grade for the 7th grade unit on building in 3D virtual worlds. It has also been used by the ABC Pandora Club and 8th grade Science to to classify alien forms of life.
  6. EBooks have been introduced to 6th,7th and 8th grades. 6th worked on creating books, with Book Creator on the iPads, which focus on their 6th grade experiences. 7th Grade created Poetry eBooks on iBooks Author using the iMacs, a program which 8th grade utilised to create WW2 Books.
  7. Evernote was introduced to 8th grade as a virtual notebook for research projects.
  8. EasyBib was introduced to KS3 as a tool for generating bibliographies using school Google Apps accounts.
  9. iPads have been introduced to KS3 throughout ICT and Creative Carrousel lessons and are used for a wide variety of purposes by students.

Technology, Cross Curricular and Global Awareness

  1. Cross curricular initiatives have grown between the LRC, Spanish Humanities, Science and English.
  2. Students are more open to trying out new tools and developing their skills. and have well established edtech toolkits.
  3. Global Awareness has been worked into Life Skills and ICT lessons, through collaborative work with other schools, research on current events and global issues and collaborative work within the school.
